Facade, SPRING/BREAK Art Show + Elizabeth Denny

Facade, SPRING/BREAK
Elizabeth Denny presents "Façade,” a collaborative installation
by Jordan Tate and Future Retrieval (Katie Parker and Guy
Michael Davis). Façade exposes the structures of artifice,
like an exploded diagram highlighting not only the
trompe l'oeil but the foundation that supports it. A
high/low rendering allows 3D to be flattened and 2D to
be expanded. The artists are playing on these expectations
and dismantling them at the same time, trying to copy
from existing preconceptions and paste them in to recreate
a scene that never existed. For this work, they are expanding
their repertoire; using a variety of processes to “catch”
historic busts and sculptures for retranslation. These
sculptures continue to play with function in the face of
façade, referencing ideas of process vs. product.
The photographs work in a similar fashion, a flattened
niche houses recreated and altered artifacts of art
historical relevance. The topiary forest moves back and
forth – a cardboard cutout made from a three-dimensional
object photographed, flattened, and duplicated. These
pieces exist as both sculpture and documentation, gesturing
towards the suspension of disbelief. In true copy/paste
fashion the artists collage disparate elements while forcing
them to exist on the same plane. Façade employs both humor
and homage to combine a high-low approach to a mixed
media English Garden.
