Marbled Vignette, ceramic, hand cut paper, wood, 35” x 17”, 2021.
The oval or parabola leads us into a window or portal - a nod to the oval landscapes of the Hudson River School, possibly representing the eye or human perspective. This particular piece Marbled Vignette carries over from the fellowship we had at the Lloyd library and Museum , where we were studying rare books of botanical illustrations and the documents belonging to Curtis Lloyd, a pharmacist and mycologist. The design of Marbled Vignette comes from Lloyd's own documentation of mushroom species as well as the visual and tactile quality of the books from this collection. The marbled imagery in the background is taken from one of the Lloyd's (many) hand marbled paper book bindings.
The ceramic piece is high fired black clay, and was made to resemble a mushroom cake, referencing how mushrooms are grown indoors.
